    ·         AETC Launches Project NEXUS to Train Tech-Savvy Airmen Air Education and Training Command on July 9 launched a test initiative to spread greater technological knowledge throughout Air Force squadrons, according to a USAF release.  The five-month “Project NEXUS” at AFWERX in Austin, Texas, will bring in 18 airmen from diverse career fields and backgrounds to dig into data science, software development, or app design, the release said.  As part of the boot camp-style training like that offered in commercial industry, three groups of six airmen will complete capstone projects that tackle data science or software-development problems that AETC currently faces, according to Lt. Col. Eric Frahm, director of the command’s Technology Integration Detachment.  “After the 120-day training at Project NEXUS, participants will return to their home units armed with the skills to more effectively solve their career field’s operational problems,” Capt. Kyle Palko, the program’s manager, added.  “If the Project NEXUS prototype ends up delivering outsized output and capable personnel and can scale cost effectively, then we could look at scaling up Air Force-wide.  If not, it would still be a success because we'll take lessons learned and roll them into other Air Force initiatives.”  Project NEXUS runs through November and mirrors other Air Force efforts to build software knowledge across the service.  (22 July 2019)

    • ·         Trump: Administration to Review Pentagon Computer Contract President Donald Trump said July 18 that the administration will “take a very long look” at a massive multibillion-dollar contract the Pentagon is preparing to award for a cloud computing system, citing “tremendous complaints” he’s heard about the process.  (22 July 2019)
    • ·         China Cyber Attacks on AFSPC Contractors "Stealing Us Blind."  “Cyber keeps me up at night,” says Brig. Gen. DeAnna Burt, director of Air Force Space Command operations and communications, because China’s cyber warriors are routinely breaching defense and space contractor networks and stealing data on a regular basis. Breaking Defense(23 July 2019)
    • ·         SECDEF Confirmed, Sworn In.  The Senate on July 23 confirmed Mark Esper to be the 27th defense secretary by a vote of 90-8, and hours later President Donald Trump officially swore him in during a White House ceremony. Esper sailed through his confirmation process, which officially began eight days before the vote when his name was formally submitted to the Senate. The White House on July 23 also formally nominated Pentagon Comptroller David Norquist to be deputy secretary of defense.  (24 July 2019)

    ·         Second Annual AFWERX “Fusion” Event Tackles Multidomain Operation The Air Force wants all the help it can get to tackle a wicked problem like multidomain operations.  AFWERX—a multifaceted Air Force group broadening the service’s outreach to small businesses, helping grow startups, and touting fast prototyping over traditional acquisition—is trying to level the playing field so more companies can contribute to the future multidomain enterprise.  The organization’s “Fusion Xperience” conference a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip brings together around 120 companies that responded to the Air Force’s call for tools that enable “rapid decision-making and coordinated response across multiple domains.”  Startups stand shoulder-to-shoulder with major defense contractors; venture capitalists can scope out potential investment opportunities.  (24 July 2019)

    • ·         NSA to Establish Cybersecurity Directorate,  The National Security Agency’s first-ever cybersecurity directorate, charged with bringing its cyber and foreign-intelligence taskings under a single umbrella and combating risks to America’s defense-industrial base and national security systems, will go operational on October 1.  Anne Neuberger, who previously served as the NSA’s deputy operations director and its inaugural chief risk officer, will head the directorate and report directly to agency boss and US Cyber Command boss Army GEN. Paul Nakasone, the agency said in a release.  The agency said the new directorate is meant to breathe new life into the agency’s “white hat mission,” which will, in turn, create opportunities for new cybersecurity partnerships and clients.  “It will also build on our past successes, such as Russia Small Group, to operationalize our threat intelligence, vulnerability assessments, and cyber defense expertise to defeat our adversaries in cyberspace,” the release said.  Additionally, the directorate is expected to foster better collaboration with the agency’s intragovernmental partners, including CYBERCOM, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  (24 July 2019)
    • ·         New AU/CC Named.  Maj. Gen. James Hecker has been nominated to receive his third star and take over as president of Air University, the Pentagon announced July 24.  Hecker is currently the vice director of operations for the Joint Staff, and had previously been the commander of air operations for the war in Afghanistan. In his new position, Hecker would relieve Lt. Gen. Anthony Cotton, whose next assignment has not been announced.  Air University, located at Maxwell AFB, Ala., provides military education from pre-commissioning to degree-based and continuing education for officers, enlisted personnel, and civilians.  (25 July 2019)
    • o   NOTE: Lt Gen Cotton will become Deputy Commander, AF Global Strike Command.
    • ·         Multi Domain Ops Push Turns to Joint Force.  A high-level governance body could soon emerge to help oversee how the Defense Department collectively pursues multi-domain operations, an Air Force official tells Air Force Magazine.  To truly succeed at quickly calling up any combat capability, anytime and anywhere, multi-domain operations can’t solely be an Air Force venture.  One of the first attempts to broaden multi-domain operations to the joint force will take place at a command and control experimentation center at Nellis AFB, NV, known as the “Shadow Operations Center.”  (25 July 2019)

    • o   With 13 qualified candidates for the Mayoral election, a decision was made to wait until after the initial election and the candidates for the runoff have been identified.  This will allow the forum to be more focused on the most likely candidates and allow for a wider range of topics to be discussed.
    • ·         Help Wanted!  This event needs help from the MIP membership.  We will need a POC to gather questions and prepare “read-aheads” for candidates.  We also need someone to coordinate the invitations and work with the candidates to prepare for the forum.  A moderator is also needed to manage the discussion.  Plan on discussing in detail as a main agenda item for next week’s MIP Meeting.  (21 June 2019)
