    • ·         AFA Daily Report

    ·         SECAF Nomination Almost ReadyBarbara Barrett's formal nomination to be the next Air Force secretary remains held up as officials finish the ethics paperwork required to send her name to the Senate for consideration, two sources tell Air Force Magazine. “They are in the final stages of completing all of the ethics paperwork,” a source close to the Barretts said in an email. “There are no showstoppers.” It takes a while to unwind the nominee from her extensive business resume, a Senate aide added. President Donald Trump announced his intent to pick the former chair of The Aerospace Corporation and deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration to lead the Air Force in May. Barrett “looks forward to a confirmation hearing as early as possible in September,” the source close to the family said.  (5 August 2019)

    • ·         North Korea Took $2 Billion in Cyber Attacks to Fund Weapons Program—UN Report.  North Korea has generated an estimated $2 billion for its weapons of mass destruction programs using “widespread and increasingly sophisticated” cyber attacks to steal from banks and cryptocurrency exchanges, according to a confidential U.N. report seen by Reuters on August 5.  (6 August 2019)
    • ·         Hacker Community to Take on DARPA Hardware Defenses at DEF CON 2019.  This August, DARPA will bring a demonstration version of a secure voting ballot box equipped with hardware defenses in development on the System Security Integrated Through Hardware and Firmware (SSITH) program to the DEF CON 2019 Voting Machine Hacking Village.  The SSITH program is developing methodologies and design tools that enable the use of hardware advances to protect systems against software exploitation of hardware vulnerabilities.  (6 August 2019)
    • ·         Faster Civilian Hiring.  The Air Force Sustainment Center launched a new website that aims to streamline civilian recruitment for jobs that are available through expedited hiring authorities, as the service tries to speed up its hiring process and attract more qualified candidates.  “We wanted a process that was seamless, user-friendly and transparent to our applicants,” Dana Crowe, the center’s personnel director, said in an August 5 release.  The website makes it easier for people outside the military to find government jobs because job seekers don’t have to be on a base network to access it, added Sarah Walker, the branch chief for the personnel directorate.  The site also offers information on various hiring paths and job-application advice.  The Air Force is pushing faster hiring practices in places like the Air Force Research Laboratory and in areas such as software development.  (7 August 2019)
    • ·         Speed Wins: MacDill AFB Contracting Awards 100K in Swift Fashion.  In order to compete in the future, innovative ideas to improve fleet readiness must reach the warfighter quickly.  In order to do just that, the 6th Contracting Squadron hosted its first-ever Pitch Day Aug. 1 at MacDill Air Force Base, where local small businesses proposed innovative ideas to help increase overall base efficiency and mission effectiveness.  (7 August 2019)
    • ·         OPINION: Section 804 Gives the US an Advantage in Great Power Competition with China and Russia.  “The beauty of Section 804 is that you could describe it on a bar napkin,” write Acting Air Force Secretary Matt Donovan and Assistant Air Force Secretary for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Will Roper.  “It establishes a series of common-sense reforms: Begin prototyping earlier, nearly a year and half earlier than under the old system; give engineers more time for testing and troubleshooting; and keep flawed concepts from entering production and operations—a whopping 70 percent of any program’s total cost.”  Defense News(8 August 2019)
    • ·         Air Force General’s Supporters Mount Campaign to Make Him Leader of Space Force.  Air Force Lt. Gen. Steven Kwast, who recently left his post as commander of Air Education and Training Command at JB San Antonio-Lackland, is expected to hang up his uniform soon.  But former associates and others close to Kwast, a decorated fighter pilot, say he deserves one more assignment: four-star head of the US Space Force, a new branch of the military that Congress is poised to create in coming months. • ·         Montgomery Mayoral Candidates IT Forum.
    • ·         A forum with candidates for the mayor of Montgomery, focusing on how the City’s IT vision and potential will be held on Thursday 22 August 2019 beginning at 1700 in the Rosa Parks Museum auditorium.  This is an opportunity for those of us in the IT sector to see how these candidates understand the impact of IT on our community.  (21 June 2019)
    • o   With 13 qualified candidates for the Mayoral election, a decision was made to wait until after the initial election and the candidates for the runoff have been identified.  This will allow the forum to be more focused on the most likely candidates and allow for a wider range of topics to be discussed.
    • ·         Help Wanted!  This event needs help from the MIP membership.  We will need a POC to gather questions and prepare “read-aheads” for candidates.  We also need someone to coordinate the invitations and work with the candidates to prepare for the forum.  A moderator is also needed to manage the discussion.  Plan on discussing in detail as a main agenda item for next week’s MIP Meeting.  (21 June 2019)
    • ·         Topics and Questions Needed!!  All Montgomery Area MIP members are asked to draft a question or summary of a discussion topic that can be used during the Mayoral Candidates IT Forum.  Please send to mipdistro@mgm-partners.org and include “Mayoral IT Forum” as the subject.  (12 July 2019)

    • ·         Alabama National Guard Hiring Event.  On November 1, 2019, there is a unique opportunity to partner with the Army/Air National Guards for a hiring event for their guard members, spouses, and grown children.  Approximately 1800 guard members will be present that weekend, and with spouse and family in attendance, there could be a pool of 3,600 potential candidates.  We are working on a portal system that would allow the guardsmen and women to attach their resume to a form created for a specific skill set (i.e. IT, healthcare, maintenance, public service).  This would allow you, the employer, the opportunity to be able to peruse those applicants that contain the skills needed for your job opening, and would allow you the opportunity to schedule an onsite interview with that individual.  Both applicant and employer will have a link or password to access our website.  As a participating employer, you would also be able to post some information about your company and the candidates you are seeking.  If you have open positions and would like to participate in this event, please email me as soon as possible so that I can include your company name and logo in the communication going out to the guardsmen.  Full details will be provided closer to the event, but the National Guard will be promoting the event at guard weekend for the next two months.  I hope this will prove to be beneficial for both employer and employee alike, and that it can become an annual event.  Contact Gindi Prutzman, gindi.prutzman@centralalabamaworks.com, 334.300.8592, www.centralalabamaworks.com (9 August 2019)
