CMSgt Thomas W Gwaltney (USAF, Ret) passed away suddenly on 15 March 2020.  Tom was a major influence on so many of the groups and activities that made Montgomery and Maxwell Gunter what they are today.  AFCEA – AFA - Wright Flyers - Air University Foundation - Maxwell-Gunter Chiefs Group - Kiwanis Club - Montgomery Chamber of Commerce, just to name a few.  Arrangements are pending to coordinate with burial at Arlington.

    • ·         Only 1 Gate Open at Maxwell and Gunter
    • ·         Until further notice, all Maxwell AFB traffic, to include commercial vehicles, will use the Maxwell Boulevard Gate (main gate). Maxwell’s Kelly Street and Day Street gates will be closed.
    • ·         Additionally, all Gunter Annex traffic, to include commercial vehicles, will use the Congressman Dickinson Drive Gate (main gate).  Gunter’s Dalraida Street Gate will be closed. Please plan accordingly.

    • ·         Digital Twins Proliferate as Smart Way to Test Tech.  Faced with a congressional mandate to test its GPS system for cyber vulnerabilities, the Air Force commissioned a digital replica of the satellites and then asked contractors to hack the system.  The use of “digital twins” is expanding from modelling in conventional simulators to include testing of emerging technologies and systems, predicting engine performance, or training automated systems to fly a plane.  (16 March 2020)
    • ·         Roper Unveils AFVentures, Announces Nearly $1B in Small Business Contracts.  Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition Will Roper recently announced the creation of AFVentures, which will serve as an “umbrella organization for the Air Force’s efforts to work with small businesses to fund critical technologies for the warfighter,” according to a release.  During this year’s event, Roper also said the service intends to divvy up almost $1 billion in contracts among “more than 550 small businesses,” including 21 “big bet” organizations who will receive four-year, fixed priced follow-on contracts from AFVentures.  These companies are working on a variety of new technology, from an Advanced Battle Management System sensing network to a new Vertical Take Off and Landing unmanned aerial system, and Augmented Reality contact lenses.  (19 March 2020)
    • ·         Government’s Maximum Telework Policy Overlooks Contractors.  (From Nextgov)  This week the Office of Management and Budget issued a memo asking federal agencies and departments to offer “maximum telework flexibilities” to eligible employees.  A top representative for the federal services industry says it won’t do much good for contractors—or public health—if contracting officers aren’t specifically told to modify the relevant legal agreements.  See https://www.nextgov.com/cio-briefing/2020/03/governments-maximum-telework-policy-overlooks-contractors/163893/(20 March 2020)
    • ·         Statement from AFA Chairman on the Death of Retired Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Gwaltney.  (Air Force Association release)  “Chief Master Sergeant Thomas Gwaltney, USAF (Ret.), passed away Saturday, March 15,” the statement from Air Force Association chairman Gerald Murray, the 14th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, reads. “Tom was a long-time member and field leader in the Air Force Association, including the Montgomery Chapter President, Alabama State President, and South East Region President.
